The previous tenant of my new flat died the night before I moved in. It was only after I got the keys that I noticed his “date of death” was listed as 08/16/2017 but I moved in on 08/15/2017.

Update: thank you guys for the gold and silver and everyone that invested a minute or two on this story. I appreciate it and I’ll update again if anything happens!

Update #2: I think you guys have given me the courage to do it so later tonight I’m going to check the loft. If I don’t update tomorrow it’s because I’m a chicken or dead.

I live in a block of student accommodation in the UK. I picked up my keys today for my new flat and each of the keys has a tag with a note with what it’s for and they also included a note with all the flat numbers, which is helpful because they don't have any numbers on the actual doors. On the note there’s a few bits of useful information like a postcode for each door (we have five in total; one for the flat, one for the corridor and three for the people in the flat below us), landlord details, our joint deposit details, etc. One of the additional notes on the page is the previous tenant information.

Address: [redacted]
Flat number: [redacted]
Postcode: [redacted]
Name: [Redacted]
DOB: 25/09/1998
Move in date: 01/09/2016
Move out date: 08/16/2017
Next address: [Redacted]
Next landlord: [Redacted]
DOB of landlord: [Redacted]

I was a bit concerned when I saw the move out date because I moved in a day before that and this isn’t my first time moving into a new place, I know how it works. I'm currently staying in a friend’s spare room until I move out and I saw him move in a week after I did back in September. The fact that they can’t even get my move in date right worries me.

I phoned the emergency maintenance guy I have saved and asked him if he could confirm that the previous tenant had moved out on 08/16/17. He said that the previous tenant would be unable to move out because he’s dead.

Apparently, he killed himself in his bedroom which is where I’m sleeping now. The maintenance guy said it happened on 08/16/2017 and was allowed to say that although he didn’t tell me how he died, just that he had thought about moving in the days leading up to it. He also said that one of the landlords had died of a heart attack in late July and that it was very sudden and unexpected. I don’t know if that has anything to do with anything but at least I now know who the landlord was because the new one has the surname [Redacted] and DOB [Redacted].

If it was suicide then I can’t think of anything that would cause someone I’ve never met to kill themselves a day before I moved in. Every time I think about it, I get a weird feeling in my chest.
