I stole hundreds of dollars from work, almost got fired, and now my boss is making me buy food for my coworkers with that money.

I don’t know how much it was, because I never counted it, but I’ve been stealing hundreds of dollars from my job for the past 6-8 months. It’s cash that should be going to the company account every night, but I take it home with me instead.

The first time it happened, I took a $20, and I knew it was wrong, but the next day, no one noticed, and I figured I’d be okay if I did it again. Then it was $50, then $100, then $200, until I was taking hundreds home with me every week.

My boss found out 3 weeks ago, and he told me that he was going to fire me, because one of my coworkers accused me of taking money. But I cried, and begged him not to fire me because I needed the money, and he said he’d let me keep working there on one condition: I had to buy food for my coworkers.

He gave me a card with $200 on it, and he said that’s how much I owed them. Every day, I have to buy my coworkers snacks and lunches, and I’m not allowed to eat any of it. It doesn’t matter what they want; if someone wants to go to McDonalds, I have to go, and if they want me to bring something back, I have to do it.

It’s been three weeks, and I still haven’t used up all of the money. Sometimes they’ll ask for something small, like a granola bar or a bottle of water, and other times, they’ll ask for an entire meal. The card is running low, and I know my boss will find out if I take more money. But I don’t know what to do.

Edit: Just to clarify, I’m 17, and I work in retail.

Update: For everyone who has been asking me to share more about the situation, I’d be happy to answer your questions in the comments. However, I will no longer be replying to comments or messages asking me who I am, or where I am located. This is for my own safety, and the safety of others. Thank you all for understanding.

Update 3/05/24: I’ve stopped taking money, and my boss has given me a second chance. I will no longer be answering questions about this, and I will no longer be replying to comments about this post. I am grateful for all of the support I’ve received, and I appreciate everyone who has commented and messaged me.
