I was trying to be a good employee but now I am probably being sued.

When I was in college I got a job as a deli worker. At the time I was (and still am) a vegan. That means that I don't eat any animal products including milk, cheese, eggs, and sometimes honey. For moral reasons I do not want to consume these products.

One day at work I was asked to make some samples. Now normally when we made samples we were encouraged to make them with a small amount of product we were using. For example if we had a pre-made mixture of cheese, meat, lettuce, and tomato and we were going to put it on crackers we were only supposed to take maybe an eighth of a cup of the mixture to use and put the rest back in the fridge to use later. We would only save the mixture for a couple of days and the waste did not bother me that much because it was such a little amount.

This particular day we were sampling cheese. We had huge blocks of cheddar, Swiss, and mozzarella. I was asked to make cheese and crackers. This was a problem because I could not take a little amount of cheese (maybe an eighth of a cup) and make it look like a sample. I was explicitly told to take more out of the fridge. When you take a cheese and cut out a slice into bite sized pieces it takes a lot to actually look like a sample. I was asked to make 20 of these samples.

So here is what I did. I took small slices of cheese out of each block (about 1/4 inch thick about a 4x5 inch square) and cut them into fourths. I took each square of cheese and made samples out of them. At the end of my shift I had 20 samples. When I was closing up that night I was told to throw away all of the samples that hadn't been eaten. I took all of the cheese and threw it away.

The next morning my boss called me and asked me why I threw away so much cheese. I told him I did exactly what I was told and he got mad at me and said I wasted over $20 worth of cheese. I told him that I was instructed to throw all of the samples away. He said that I should have wrapped them up and put them in the fridge. I told him I couldn't fit all of the cheese in the fridge so I threw it away. He said he was going to talk to my manager about me. I told him to do it because I did what I was told. The next week I was let go for "misconduct". I later received a notice from a lawyer that I owed them just over $20 for the cheese I threw away plus lawyer and court fees.

I am not a villain. I was just doing what I was told.
