My dad had been begging my sister and me to let him get a new puppy for the house, and we both ended up saying yes. After going to the pound, he brought one home and named it something weird. The dog, a cute little terrier mix, is named La Llorona. I don't know the reasoning behind it, all I know is he got the name from one of his Mexican coworkers. It's not so bad, but as he says the name, he always says it in a funny voice the way my sister sometimes pronounces the name the same way. "Well there she is, La Llorona!" in a bad American-Mexican accent. It's not so bad I guess.

I woke up to him this morning talking in that voice again: "La Llorona! I'm coming!" I couldn't see it from my window but I could hear him walking down towards the river. I knew it was odd, but oh well. He likes to talk to dogs like that I guess. It wasn't until he didn't come back to change his pajamas like he always did that I got worried. When I went to look for him, I found our La Llorona sleeping in his room on his side of the bed. Later that afternoon, a car pulled up to the house. It was my dad's coworker, and he had some bad news. My father had drowned the previous day. A bunch of fisherman found his body in the river. He had been dead about six hours when they found him. I felt bad for my dad, but it was nice that his coworker was so nice about his death. This morning, he dropped off some of my dad's favorite treats. He said that my dad had given them to him the day before he died and said they were for me. I didn't think much of it, but when I opened them I noticed something strange. They weren't dog treats. They were a box of Pop-Tarts, the kind my dad always ate. I wondered for a second if my dad had meant to die. I remember him talking about the La Llorona from the stories, about how she drowned her children. My dad was my age when that happened. He was young. Then it clicked. A young woman drowned her own children. A young man drowned his children.

I don't know what to do now, I'm too scared to sleep in my own house. And my sister has been acting really weird ever since dad left. Every time I walk past her room, I hear her talking to herself in that accent. "My babies, I'm coming..."
