I used to lie about my ethnicity to seem cooler

I'm Chilean American, and my one of my grandmas is half Mapuche (Chilean native americans). She's the only one in my family who's mixed, but somehow I used to tell people in high school that I was half Apache. I don't really know what made me say it, but people would always ask about my darker color (I'm dark skinned for Chilean standards, but very light for Apache standards lol) and I'd just make up a random tribe. Sometimes I'd say Hispanic, and sometimes I'd make up a tribe.

I said this for a couple of years, and I feel so embarrassed about it. My family had no idea that I was saying this until my grandma found out in college. She was so mad and disappointed, but I didn't do it to say that I'm American Indian to get benefits, but I truly felt so bad that I was lying about my family so much.

I ended up getting my DNA done last year, and I came out 1% Indigenous (no clue where it came from) and the rest Spanish and Italian. So I guess I was right all along.
