I’m a college student, had to drop out because of a lack of finances. No help from my family, just me. I got a job at a grocery store, and was working in the deli department 2 days a week. I’m hungry a lot, and can’t afford to eat lunch most of the time. If I’m lucky, I get $30 per pay period to use for groceries.

This year, my paychecks have been way smaller than usual. So I’m just more hungry. I’m not taking a lot of food. I don’t steal whole chickens, or full pies. I take cookies, or a piece of cake, bologna, or crackers from the deli counter. I always make sure that I do my work well, and I’m always kind to customers.

I just think it’s funny when I see videos of ppl stealing bread from the grocery store and the employees are like “oh my god I can’t believe they’re doing this! We can’t afford to let people steal from us.” And I’m over here like they’re stealing a loaf of bread? No wonder they can’t afford to pay their employees more.

I feel like I’m just taking a lunch I’m not being paid for.

Edit: I haven’t been working at the same grocery store for over a year. Also, I don’t want a handout. I don’t want anyone to send me money or anything. Just thought it would be kind of funny for you to read this from the perspective of an employee. I know a lot of people steal from grocery stores, but I thought it would be interesting for you to read an employee’s perspective. I’m not doing this out of spite, or boredom. I’m doing this because I need to eat.
