My grandmother used to sing this to me when I was a kid: “I can see you, I can hear you, and I can touch you. So why don’t you reply?”

I never really gave it much thought, it was just a silly thing she’d say as a joke or to annoy me. One day, I asked her why she said that. She told me that her mom used to say it to her when she was growing up.

It wasn’t until I got much older that I asked my mother if she knew why we always said that. My mom had been practically estranged from her for the last 10 years or so, but she still answered my questions.

According to her, her mom was lost as a kid. Before my mom was born, my grandmother had two children. One was born still, the other was lost. Apparently, my grandmother had gone into labor very quickly at home, and had to cut the umbilical cord herself. She went into shock, and her son was lost in the process. The police never found him.

My mom never knew what happened to him, but always felt that she was being watched and that her brother was always nearby. I never believed it, but I still feel like that to this day. Like someone is watching me.

What does it mean?
