When in the military, do NOT get fist bumps from Generals, Admirals, or other Senior officers when they walk by.

When in the military most of the time you will be asked to keep your hands in your pockets. Well, when your hands are in your pockets, your uniform creases look smoother, and you can’t give anybody a handshake, fist bump, or slap without having to take your hands out of your uniform. You have to put your hands in your uniform and take them back out, and sometimes that can make you look unprofessional and stiff.

But one day I didn’t have to put my hands in my pockets, and I was really happy that I just got to have them out at my sides. My non-commissioned officers told me to keep my hands out of my pockets, because we were at a military ceremony, and we took our hands out of our pockets. Well, there were a lot of Generals and Admirals there, and one of the admirals walked in, and then he came up to me and gave me a fist bump. It caught me off guard, and I did not give him a fist bump, and I gave him a handshake.

My officers, including the ones from the Navy, said I should have definitely gave him a fist bump to give him the respect that he deserves. I learned my lesson that day, and if an officer ever gives you a fist bump, you give him a fist bump.
