I hope this is allowed on this sub as it may be a little long winded... if so, apologies! I'm a nurse, I could not tell you exactly how long ago this experience was to the date, but it's been many many years and I still can't get over this, it has forever changed me and nothing really makes me mad. Why you ask? Read! I've been an ER nurse for about 5 years now. I was in training for 3 years at a 120 bed hospital which was very very active for its size. I worked all sorts of shifts, and on one of my shifts working nights, I had a code blue called over the PA system. I rushed to the room where all the staff were standing, and all I saw was a little boy, no more than 3 years old lying on the bed, lifeless.

It was a car accident, I don't know the specifics, but from what I remember a car ran a red light, lost control and blasted into a car that had a family and the grandfather. The grandfather was the one driving, he died at the scene, and the kids (there were 3, two sisters and the little boy) and the mother were rushed to our hospital. The mom was in the OR, and the sisters were in other rooms being monitored, and they were okay for the most part. But this little boy, was on that table, and I'll never forget... he had a cranial hematoma, that means there was a lot of blood over his brain, which probably made his brain swell... It was an awful sight, SB Tube (breathing tube) in his mouth, several IVs in his head, and body.

The whole ER and code blue team were there working on him. We got his heart to go for over an hour but it would stop again. I watched the whole thing take place. Several times, I almost broke down, I was so upset, I was in training, I was 19 years old, and I had a 3 year old sister, that was a very hard pill to swallow. We had given up, and we thought we lost him. We put the kid in the hospital gown, and made him look half decent with a small tube in his nose, and his closed eyes. We put him in a body bag, and rolled him to a private room near the ER's entrance. The parents were in the OR, and the sisters were in other rooms, so we put the monitor outside the room, and shut the door.

We closed the door, made sure nobody was near, and we took the body bag off of him, so the parents could say their good byes. So in order to take the body bag off of him, we needed to flip him over as the zipper was in the back. We flipped him over, and grabbed the sides of the body bag and pulled it off.

The kid, stood straight up, with a blank stare, and jerked all over his body, and let out the most terrifying scream I have ever heard. It was a long scream, like a wail, but loud! Like nothing I've ever heard. The scream was so loud, that it made the lights in the room blink rapidly, like if someone was flickering a light switch constantly. The lights in the ER aren't just a flick of a switch, its a large electrical system, it was so loud. All of us fell over, it was so terrifying, and we watched the kid scream with black eyes and fall to the ground, lifeless. We rushed him out quickly and got him into a room.

He was put on life support shortly after. The parents were told, and they were in disbelief, that their child fell to the ground and was now on life support. The whole thing happened in front of the shift supervisor, the charge nurse, and the patients nurse. The charge nurse and supervisor were two older nurses that were there for years and years, and the patients nurse was one of our full time nurses we worked with every night. We all told them what happened. They did not believe us, and thought that we were just kids that were upset over the whole thing.

Shortly after, a few days, the kid had no brain activity, and the parents decided not to keep him on life support any more. We took him off of life support, and sure enough, as soon as we did, he turned around.... did the same blank stare, and jerked all over, let out the same terrifying scream, and the lights flickered again. We all looked at each other, and several of us started crying. I was so terrified, I couldn't think of anything else. The kid fell over and died.

The charge nurse and supervisor were present for all of this. We all told the police what happened, and they thought we were out of our minds. The charge nurse and supervisor told them that we were lying. I was so angry, I didn't know what to do, I was so upset. The patients nurse filed a report with the hospital, nothing came of it, and the charge nurse and supervisor told us not to speak of it again or we would be fired. We all talked about it, and the patients nurse said that she would anyway, and she would make sure someone heard. Nothing ever came of it.

The patients nurse was let go a few months later, and I'm sure it was because of that. She sued, but nothing came of it.

I hope I don't get blasted for this, it was a very long post, but to this day, I still think of this on a daily basis, and I still get really upset when I think of it. It was awful, nothing like that should ever happen! And I'm sure nobody would ever believe me!
