I am a voice actor for a popular kids show. I’ve had a few auditions recently where they’ve asked me to scream in absolute agony. I don’t feel comfortable doing it but they’ve been persistent. What am I going to be the voice of?

I hope it’s not the kid’s screams when they realize they’ve been watching shows with my voice acting for years.

Edit: Wow. I have no idea how this blew up so quick.

For those of you asking, I am an old man. Like, an old old man. I’m ancient. When I started voice acting we still had VHS and I was already about to retire. I’ve been doing voice acting since before I was born. I’m a spry voice actor for my age, I guess.

I guess I should clarify something about how this all works. I don’t know how much of the process you guys are familiar with, but in my case, I get a call from some producers and they’re like “we need an old guy to do this voice that sounds like it’s in a lot of pain and we really love your voice.” It’s a union gig, so they can’t really make me do anything I don’t want to do. I don’t do a lot of voice acting for TV shows, because I’m old and don’t really have patience for a lot of screaming and yelling.

I did get some auditions for cartoons a few years ago, but I ended up turning those down after they asked me to do some screaming sounds. I don’t like screaming. I’m not really capable of it, either. I’m just not cut out for that kind of thing. I want to take it easy. I’ve worked hard my whole life. I’m mostly retired now. I don’t have a lot of money, but it’s enough. I’ve got a wife and a house. I’m not really worried about money at this point in my life.

My main issue is that the producers don’t call me about this stuff very often anymore, so when they do, I feel obligated to say yes, even if I really want to be like “hey, if you call me again, I’m going to report you to the authorities.”

That’s not a good way to get your name out there.

They asked me to do a few lines for some cartoon, they didn’t send me the script, so I’m not really sure what it’s all about. They just said that they wanted some “screams and moans of pain.” They said they wanted me to do a few different lines, and talked about a few different characters that I would be doing the voice for. I told them I wasn’t comfortable with it, but they said they could pay me more. I said and they suddenly offered me triple the amount I was normally paid. I always thought there was something fishy about this gig, but I didn’t realize what it was until now.

This morning, I got a call, and they asked me if I would do the job for a lot of money. They offered me a lot of money for some screams. A lot.

So I guess I’m going to do it. I don’t really know what movie or show I’m doing the voice acting for, but I think you guys have given me a few ideas.
