I stole thousands of dollars as a kid by editing the return receipts at Toys R Us

Okay so this was probably 20 years ago. I was about 13-15 and I spent my weekends working at the local Toys R Us. They were pretty lax about paying attention to this kind of stuff, and they really didn’t care about returns that much. In fact, they intentionally made it easy to get store credit back on an item without a receipt.

The way it worked was you could bring an item in, and a employee would check the item (to make sure it was still in the original packaging etc.) and without a receipt you would get store credit for 80% of the lowest sale price in the last 30 days. They used some proprietary scanner to scan the barcode and it would print out a receipt that had the price on it.

So what you would do was you’d return an item, the employee would scan the item and see the price, then print out a receipt showing that price. You’d get a gift card with credit for that price.

But there was a trick to this. If you scanned the item twice, it would print out that same receipt twice. But, the second receipt was a duplicate return receipt. Then you could just return both receipts to the same employee and they would give you two gift cards.

They weren’t really paying attention so I was doing this on almost every return. I doubt they ever caught it, and I was making an extra $500-1000 dollars a month as a kid doing this.

Pretty fucked up and I’ve never admitted this to anyone.
