I’ve stolen thousands of dollars from the fast food restaurant I work at.

I’m a supervisor at a chain fast food joint- I’ve been there 13 years. I’ve always done right by them and gotten the job done, my store always does well. They’ve always said they didn’t know what they’d do without me and the other managers. They’d send us nice gifts and six figure bonuses for Christmas. As a supervisor I make about 35k a year. It’s interesting how much money your managers get and how much the regular workers get, but I’m thankful for my opportunity and I appreciate my job.

They’d always tell us they couldn’t afford to give us a raise so I knew they were lying. I know how the system worked and I knew how easy it’d be to steal from them.

It all boils down to an agreement between my husband, who also works at the store (the manager sees him as a family member) and I. The weekend he works the late shift, is the weekend he gets to steal as much as he wants.

I hold the safe combo, and he has the main keys- each weekend we’re in charge for one shift. We have a CCTV camera outside and a few cameras of the dining room and drive thru. We close at 10. On the last hour my husband will take the trash out, and with it, the hard drive for the cameras. And then we just shut the cameras down and then lock up.

We’ll always make sure to leave our phones in the storage room because we don’t want gps to trace us, so we’ll set the time on the clock in the back. We give ourselves an hour- sometimes we do it in 45 minutes. Make it quick, take what we can.

We take any large notes, as much loose cash as possible, and the credit card deposits.

We always make sure to lock the safe and get all the cameras back on before we open the next morning.

We’ll then take the hard drive home and plug it into an old computer and delete the footage.

The next morning we’ll put the hard drive back in the NVR box and nothing would happen.

We were smart, somehow.

We did it right. And it felt so good.

We’ve stolen thousands. This past year alone we’ve stolen over £10k. (I’m from the UK). The owners know but he doesn’t want to take it to the police, that’s why it’s never been reported. He said he’ll let us keep our jobs as long as we don’t do it again- I think he knows it’ll make him look bad.

My husband and I always joke “what if we got caught by the owner himself.”

This last weekend was his turn. He took the trash out and then deleted the cameras, same as usual. But this time my manager was still there. He didn’t want to risk taking the hard drive out, in case he got caught, so he text me to just get him a cardboard box from the storage room.

I text him back and said “no! Get the hard drive! It’s the risk we take each time.” He said “if I get caught then we’re fucked!” But I said “if you don’t get caught, we’re both fucked.” I was stern and serious. This is what fuels our agreement.

My manager looked at me weird and asked why I was sending texts, so I said I was just sending my husband a happy birthday text. He laughed and said “I thought that was last week!” He was right- his birthday was last week. I said “oh that’s weird, maybe I’ll just take a glance at my phone and see what he said.” And then I booked it to the back and got the hard drive.

We got the footage deleted and then we made a large cash drop. It felt amazing. It’s not even always the money, it’s the thrill. It’s almost addictive. Even if I got a raise I don’t think I could stop.

[Edit] thank you so much for all the kind comments :) the reason I think my manager didn’t take it further is because there were signs that it had been going on for a while. And the cameras are old anyway so they wouldn’t have been able to pinpoint a day/time. We also live in a small town with no police, so it’s mainly the manager making sure the community isn’t aware of anything like this.
As for the CCTV footage I’ve never seen an instance where footage goes beyond a week.

And to answer the lady who said we’re greedy assholes, I don’t think my husband and I are assholes. We always put in 110% at work and I take pride in my job. Yes, we take the money, but it’s not for bad reasons. We have a 2 year old daughter, my husband’s mum is terminally ill with cancer and we’re the only family she has. Like I said in my comment above, I can only afford to work one day a week because childcare is so expensive.

My husband gets a lot of time off to care for his mum, and I usually take the day off to look after our daughter.

I tell a lot of the comments that our income is barely enough for ourselves, let alone a sick parent and a child.

We’re just trying to survive.
