I Kill Baby Fish

Throwaway account cause I’m no where near brave enough to post this on my main.

I used to work at petsmart and part of our job was cleaning the tanks every morning. We had to siphon out all the water, clean the gravel and decorations, scrub down the tank with these scrubbers, and fill it back up with water. It was a lot easier for the smaller tanks but the bigger ones were much harder and took longer. I barely killed any from the smaller tanks but for the bigger ones…. I couldn’t help it. The fish would be swimming up to the glass wall of their tank, trying to get away from the scrubber but it would end up scraping against their scales and blood would be coming out. Sometimes they would get so hurt they wouldn’t be able to swim properly and would just float at the top of the water, barely breathing, until we were done.

Sometimes when we were refilling the water, we would have to put the hose in the tank. If the current was too strong, it would knock the hurt fish against the gravel at the bottom of the tank. I would see it thrashing about, bleeding, until it just died.

Other times while we were trying to get the water in the tank to the right temperature, we would either make it too hot or too cold. The fish would start thrashing about, trying to get away from the water, until they died.

I’m just putting this out there so that way I don’t have to hold it in anymore.
