If you get sick one day before your unemployment benefits run out, you can usually get an extension

Idk how common this is, but I had a cousin who was collecting unemployment for like a year working odd jobs. His last day of collecting was a Monday, and he felt sick, so he went to the doctor. The doctor said he had bronchitis. My cousin called the unemployment office and told them what was up. He got an extension that lasted until he could go back to work, which he said was two more months.

My mom was laid off around the same time and her benefits were going to run out in two months. She asked my dad to take her to the doctor, and sure enough, she came back with a note saying she couldn't work for two months.

Their theory was that the government doesn't want people to lose their benefits and end up being homeless and on welfare. If people lose their employment benefits, they usually end up on welfare, and welfare doesn't pay the government back money. I don't think this actually works in real life. I think the government would always rather pay for one than the other. But I think it's true that the government does usually grant extensions to people who ask.
