I stole over $50,000 from my job in 3 months

I’m 21 years old and have been working at my current job for 6 years. I have 2 children and my partner works at the same place as me. Working for a big company has its advantages and one of its advantages is being able to expolit loopholes.

The company I work for sells telecommunication services like phone & internet, etc. We have a software we use to complete orders and manage accounts. It’s very user friendly software and there is a lot of checks and balances. You cannot manipulate the orders to the point of going completely undetected. In fact, they have something called a red flag, meaning if you do something suspicious enough, it will trigger a red flag.

But we found out that there is a loophole to steal from orders. And its by a simple overcharge. If an order is completed as an overcharge, it will not get picked up by any red flags so you can go under the radar. For example, if I sell you the phone for $500. Instead of selling it to you for $500, I do a $1300 purchase, and then $800 credit. So the net result is $500 but I get $1300 in cash for the order (this is how orders work, you do a normal purchase price and then a credit for any promotions. In this case, i do a purchase and no promotion). In most cases, people who are not tech savvy will not check.

I did this over and over. But it was getting risky, so I just did it for close family and friends. It was getting very risky and I was already caught up in orders and the company was questioning and I was scared I would get fired. So I decided that I would just do this for my parents. I convinced my dad to get a new phone, so I did a $1300 charge and gave him a $1000 credit. I used the money to pay off debt. I did this for my mom, Aunts and Uncles and even my cousins. But as time went on, I was making so much money and was acting reckless. So I decided that I would just start selling them at my original price of $500 but charge them $1300.

I convinced so many people to get new phones. And told them that they would only have to pay $500 for it. But I charged them $1300 and the company would give them a $1300 credit on their account. Someone for example would buy 2 phones and would have to pay $2600. I would give them the 2 phones and they would use their $2600 credit. And I would have the $2600 in my pocket. I did this so many times, for so many people. And I didn’t stop. I did this over and over and over. And the company would have no idea of what was happening. I got new phones, I paid my debt, I bought a car, I bought a house, I spent money on stupid things. And they would have to give credit back to the people.

For example, I sold a person 4 phones and they had to pay $5200. They would pay $5200, and I would get 100% of that money. And then the company would have to give them a $5200 credit. So the person technically gets the phones for free, but I get to keep all the money. And they can use their credit for their phone bill.

I slowed down last year, but then picked up again this year. And I did it so much that I lost count of how much money I have stolen from them. I think it’s well over $50,000. But I started to get noticed by my company. I was starting to get caught up in orders and they were starting to notice. A few weeks ago, they called me up and asked me to do a training session to teach me how to use the software properly. I told them that I was a very experienced employee and I didn’t require any training. But they said that they noticed a few things that were wrong.

I was so scared, I didn’t know what to do. I knew that they would catch me eventually and I knew I would get fired. I was so scared and anxious that I was starting to act strange. I was very stressed out and I didn’t know what to do. I was so angry that I started to throw things around and I was just so angry.

But they never called me back and never followed up. I think they forgot about me or they just moved on. But it was a major wake up call. I stopped doing it and I won’t do it again. I’m so lucky that I didn’t get caught and I’m glad that I was able to make a lot of money and pay off my debt. But I’m also mad at myself for being so careless.
