I ruin this guy’s life and destroy his relationship by playing a prank on my boyfriend

I actually posted this on relationship_advice, but I think it’s relevant to post here too because of the outcome, you’ll see after you read the story. I’ve since deleted it because it is stupid to post on the wrong subway anyway, and I’m just going to copy and paste it here without many changes. Sorry if you read the story before.

Basically what happened was that my boyfriend and I share an email for our landlady. We use it for paying rent but otherwise it’s mostly just for communicating with our landlady. One day I decided to play a little prank on my boyfriend so I emailed him from our shared email. It was completely harmless: a little funny story from something that reminded me of him, a little meme, something like that. Anyways, the joke was on me because my boyfriend has a pretty strict email system. He automatically deletes any unread emails after 10 days, and I forgot until after I sent the email and checked his inbox, and sure enough, my prank email was automatically deleted. The reason why I’m in this situation in the first place is that the email chain doesn’t actually delete emails, it just moves them to the trash. Which is great for this situation, because all I have to do is fish it out of the trash.

Here’s the problem: the email I sent was right before the beginning of the pandemic, and I completely forgot about it until the end of May, when we were already in a “stay at home order”, or as I like to call it, lockdown. Our landlady is not someone you can go to in person, and I don’t know her phone number. She’s an old lady, and she doesn’t want to be bothered with anything, and she’s very stubborn.

So I tried to fish the email out of the trash but it had been too long, and it had actually been deleted, not just moved out of sight. I didn’t want to tell my boyfriend because it was my fault in the first place and he would probably not like the idea of me sending random emails from his email.

I had to think of a way to get it back. I remembered that my Gmail had this “Undo Send” feature that you could click if you just sent an email and you wanted to unsend it. It’s pretty simple; it just delays the sending of the email just in case you want to edit it. After some wiggling around, I figured I could get an extension for the “Undo Send” feature to last 30 seconds, which is plenty of time to go digging around in the trash to delete the email before it actually gets sent. Problem solved! No one will ever know about the email I sent!

About a week later, I get a text from our landlady. It was some tenant asking about the price of our unit, and I thought it was weird until I looked at the email chain. Three days earlier, someone had written an email asking for prices, and my landlady had replied with some pretty typical landlord stuff that I had seen before. There was nothing unusual about it, until I realized that the email had been sent only hours after I installed the extension and played around with it.

I ran to my boyfriend’s inbox, and that’s when I saw the problem. The email I sent was pretty innocent, and it had a completely unrelated subject line, but the email body said something like “This is for you!!!”. I realized that the “Undo Send” extension was not actually unsending emails. It was delaying all emails. Every single email that was sent was delayed for 30 seconds, and all emails sent in that timeframe were deleted. I realized that I had deleted another tenant’s email, and that my landlady had been confused about the subject line, because the email I sent was completely unrelated to the subject line, and responded with some common landlord stuff.

The tenant was clearly confused, and there was an entire chain of emails between the tenant and my landlady, and it only ended with the tenant telling my landlady that they were looking elsewhere and would no longer be replying to her emails. Of course I never told my landlady, and I never will, but I’m sure she would never forget that embarrassment. She has always been a nice enough landlady, and I feel terrible for what I did.

On top of that, I have no way to turn off the extension, and I obviously cannot tell my landlady or my boyfriend about it. I feel terrible and I don’t know what to do. I have this huge feeling of guilt, and any time anyone mentions my landlady I can’t help but feel bad. I really do hope they were able to find a place to live because I feel terrible about what I did.

Edit: Because I see a lot of people asking. I don’t know how to turn off the “Undo Send” extension, and I’m not saying that the extension was the root of our problem. I know what I did wrong, and it was 100% my fault. The title makes it seem like I’m blaming the extension, but that’s not the case. I don’t control how the extensions work, and I know it works the way it does to be able to actually “undo send” an email. I just didn’t realize that’s how “Undo Send” works, because I didn’t think of it as an extension that’s meant to be used, I thought of it more as a toy that can be played with. I know my belongings better than anyone, and I should know how my extensions work, and that’s what I did wrong.
