I've been diving in the deep ocean for 32 years and know it like the back of my hand. This year, I found a spot that has no ocean floor.

I've spent my entire life on the ocean. As a young man I spent a great deal of time on ships, and in my 20s I learned to scuba dive. In my mid 20s I got my first job as a professional diver, helping inspect the hulls of naval ships. I've spent the last 15 years owning my own business doing the same thing. But I only do visual inspections. I don't dare go past the depth of 300 feet. That's where it's deep enough to drive a submersible.

I know what I'm talking about. I've spent a good 20 years of my life underwater. I've helped put ships on the ocean floor. I've retrieved people from ships that sank to the ocean floor. I've been down there more than 1,000 times. I know the ocean floor like the back of my hand. I know how to navigate it. I know what to expect.

I know exactly how far down the ocean floor is depending on what part of the ocean I'm in. I know where to look. I know what I'm looking for. I know the patterns, the depth, the temperature. I know everything. And today I found something I didn't know existed.

At 300 feet off the coast of Japan, the ocean just keeps going.
