I broke into my neighbors house and took his television, then I got away with it too.

I had no intention of stealing his TV. I had been trying to talk to him for several days about the loud noise he was making and how it was messing with me working from home. He was the caretaker for the building and his apartment was the one right next door to mine. He had these shoes that were like a plastic/ linoleum bottom and it sounded like he was walking around his apartment all day. I thought he may have been pacing back and forth because he was on a call or something. I tried construction adhesive, weather stripping, and even taking the trim off the door with still no real difference. I tried earplugs, noise canceling headphones, and even white noise. Nothing stopped his noise. I decided I needed to talk to him.

I approached him twice and both times he went back into his apartment and shut the door. The third time I approached him he was doing laundry and he let me in his apartment. Immediately I noticed there was absolutely nothing in his apartment but a bed and a large tv sitting on the coffee table. He showed me how he had noise deadening curtains where there should have been a couch. I realized he had taken out the carpet and just had a pad on the hardwood floor. Then i noticed how the fridge, stove, and dishwasher were all covered and that, along with the curtains, helped block the noise to the rest of the building. I was amazed at the work he had put into being considerate of his neighbors. Then it hit me, it doesn’t block the noise from getting to my apartment because mine was adjacent.

I asked him if he would be willing to put some of that noise deadening stuff between our apartments. He said no. I told him that I work from home and his noise is keeping me from working. He said he would work at home too if he could. My first thought was to tell him he could work at home too if the neighbors could quiet down a bit. Then I had a second thought. I realized he had no TV stand because he didn’t need one. The tv works fine sitting on the coffee table. He also didn’t need a couch because he had the bed, he didn’t need a stove because he just heated food with the microwave. There was no need for a full fridge because he had a small fridge/freezer. I didn’t see a dishwasher so I figured he used a tub and washed his dishes in the kitchen sink.

I knew this was my chance. I asked him if I could sit on the couch and he said no. I said I don’t see a couch but he just shook his head. I knew then I had to act. I told him that he had 2 options. Either he put some noise deadening material between his apartment and mine or he let me take his TV. He looked puzzled so I rephrased it in simpler terms. You either give me some peace and quiet or peace and quiet. He still had a puzzled look so I screamed at the top of my lungs “EITHER YOU GIVE ME SOME PEACE AND QUIET OR I GIVE MYSELF SOME PEACE AND QUIET!” He looked terrified and backed away from me. I slowly approached him and he continued to back away slowly. I asked if he needed help carrying it out but he told me no so I just picked it up and took it.

I got it back to my apartment and I’ve had some peace and quiet ever since.
