I stole my friends ex’s dog

I (38f) have a friend (30f) who has a 5 year old daughter. She broke up with her boyfriend (30m) 6 months ago and yesterday she told me that he is in very bad shape mentally and physically. <br><br>6 months ago, her boyfriend had a dog that they took care of together while he was living at the house, but after he moved out, the dog was living in a bad condition and the boyfriend told my friend that he was going to take the dog to the pound. <br><br>I hate seeing animals suffer, so when my friend told me that her ex-boyfriend said he was going to take the dog to the pound, I told her that I wanted to take the dog in, but she said that her ex-boyfriend doesn’t have the energy or mental capacity to bring the dog to me, so I decided to pick it up myself. <br><br>I knew that my friend’s ex-boyfriend was home alone most of the time, so I went to pick up the dog one day when I knew he would be home alone and when I got there I picked up the dog and left. The dog has been living with me for months and My friend had no idea. <br><br>She recently got suspicious because I kept taking the dog with me to places and she wondered why I was bringing the dog with me everywhere until she saw it and realized that it was her ex’s dog. <br><br>She was shocked and asked me why I never told her and I finally confessed that I stole the dog, and I told her why I did it and she was very upset. <br><br>I think what I did was wrong. I don’t know how my friend’s ex is going to handle this but I may need to take the dog back to him. I’m confused and need to know what to do.
