When I got the keys to the flat, it was in perfect condition. Except for one of the bedrooms.

It was the smallest bedroom and I was planning on using it as an office, but I was told by the landlord that the previous tenant had died in that room, and he wanted nothing to do with it.

“Alright, fine,” I said. “But how much is the flat going to be for?”

“How about we say 50% of the original price and you have the deed,” he said as he smiled and I agreed to it.

I got the keys that day and moved in the next. One of the three bedrooms had no carpet, the paint on the walls was chipped, and for an odd reason the window was stuck closed, I couldn’t open it, but I didn’t care. I was just happy to finally have a space to call my own. It was a little concerning that there was no carpet, but I guess I would have to get one my self.

On the first night as I was lying in bed, I started thinking about the previous tenant. I had no idea how he died, but the landlord mentioned it was suicide.

“Why would he do that?” I thought. “Was he feeling lonely?”

“Shut the fuck up!” I said as I tried to go to sleep but my brain kept racing. The questions were getting louder and louder until I couldn’t take it anymore.

I got up and walked into the bedroom. I turned on the light and my brain just stopped. Everything went quiet. I was so focused on something that I forgot to breathe.

On the wall, next to the door, with red paint, in big letters, it said;

“How did I die?”

As I read it, I felt something behind me. I turned around and I felt something grab my throat. I couldn’t breath and everything went black.

How did he die?

The police found me in that room, my throat clogged, no windows or doors open. The landlord was never to be seen again, and the most bizarre thing was the wall. It was cleaned. No red paint, and the words were gone.

But how did he die?

[ editing to fix some grammar and make it a bit easier to read]
