The sink in my bathroom has a voice recorder built into the faucet. It only records when someone says the phrase “What was that?”

It took me months to notice it was there. But I finally did. I stared back at it and asked “what was that?” Then the faucet started playing back the recording of my voice.

My mom walked in the door and asked me what I was doing. I said “nothing. Just trying to figure out what was that.” The sink started playing back my voice again. My mom looked really concerned. She asked me what I was talking about. I said “nothing. Just trying to figure out what was that.” The sink started playing back my voice again. I stared at the sink for a moment. Then I looked back at my mom. She was really concerned. I said “nothing. Just trying to figure out what was that.” The sink started playing back my voice again. My mom looked at it. Then she looked back at me. She said nothing. But I could tell she was thinking.

She thought for a good while. But then she asked “what was that?” Nothing happened. The sink was still. Then my mom asked again “what was that?” The sink was still. But I knew it was recording. I asked “what was that?” Then my mom asked again “what was that?” I waited a while. Then I asked again “what was that?”

Nothing happened. We just stood there. We kept asking. The sink kept recording. Then the recording stopped. My mom asked “what was that?” Then she asked again “what was that?” Then she asked once more “what was that?” Then the sink started playing back her voice. It just kept playing her voice, back and forth. I looked at my mom. She was thrilled. But then a stop button popped out from the side of the sink.

She hit the button. The recording stopped. She was so happy. She wasn’t my mom anymore. She was a stranger. I could tell she didn’t have a family. She was alone. I could tell she had been alone for a while. But then the sink started playing back her voice. “What was that? What was that? What was that?” She didn’t look worried. She just looked at the faucet. Then she asked “what was that?” The sink started playing back her voice again. “What was that? What was that? What was that?”

It just kept going. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t move. I didn’t speak. I was frozen. Then a woman walked into the bathroom. She was my mom now. She looked at the sink. Then she looked at me. I was so happy to see her. I felt tears. I was about to speak. But before I could she said “what was that?” I knew what was going to happen next. I was frozen. I was scared.

Then the sink started playing back the recording of the other woman. The recording kept going. The other woman never came back. My mom never left. I never left. I never moved. Then I said “what was that?” The sink started playing back my voice. “What was that?” it said. Then I said “what was that?” again. The sink just kept playing back my voice. Then I said again “what was that?” The sink just kept playing back my voice.

Then I realized. I wasn’t a person. I was a voice recording. I was a voice recording on the sink. I was a voice recording on the sink. I was a voice recording on the sink. I was a voice recording on the sink. I was a voice recording on the sink. I was a voice recording on the sink.
