I kept a legless dog alive for a week by drip-feeding him water and force-feeding him kibble so that my friend could say goodbye to him

About 5 years ago one of my friends was going on a trip with some other friends and I was going to take care of her dog. She lives in the US and I live in Brazil, so she wasn’t able to come back to take care of him herself.

2 days before I was to drive to her house to pick up the dog, she gets a call from her father telling her that he was hit by a car, and she decides to cut the trip short. I ask her if she wasn’t going to come back and take care of him herself instead of going on the trip, and she said no. This was because the dog was doing really poorly, had no fur, was blind, deaf, had lost all of his teeth, hadn’t shit in 3 weeks, and the day before he was hit by the car his back legs decided to stop working. So, I tell her that I didn’t think he would last very long and that she should let him go. She says that she needs to say her goodbyes to him. I ask my father and he agrees to let me keep the dog at our house and that we would take care of him until he died.

The next day we drive to her house, and pick up the dog. We put him in the back of the car, and drive to our house. The whole car reeked of shit, and the dog laid there the whole time not moving, not even to look at us.

When we get to our house, we put him in a cage my father had used to raise a puppy some years ago, and I put some of his favorite kibble in front of him. He doesn’t eat it. So I grab kibble and shove them in his mouth and he swallows. That night, when I go to bed, I hear him whining, and he has managed to drag himself out of the cage and was trying to find a place to sleep, but he hadn’t found a good spot and was sad about it. I pick him up and put him in the cage, and he goes to sleep.

The next morning I go to check on him, and his eyes are sunken, and his teeth were yellow, and he hadn’t drank any of the water that I had left there for him. My father tells me that I should just give him some water with a syringe and that he would drink it, but he didn’t. So I pinched his jaw to open it and kept forcing the water down his throat, and he swallowed. He lived like this for 9 more days, until my friend came back to Brazil and took him to the vet, and he was euthanized a couple of days after that.

I wish I could have let him go when I should have.
