Extinguishing a fire with baking soda

After a few years of cooking, I got a big problem with a pan filled with oil that started to burn and smoke a lot. Shaking the pan made the fire worse. Putting a lid on it for a couple of seconds didn't make it better. I was thinking of putting water on the fire but after my parents told me horror stories about water and fire not mixing, I didn't dare to. However, I remembered something told to me at school: baking soda. Shaking a bit of baking soda on the fire instantly made it stop burning. (Note that the fire was on the stove)

A tip: when a pan with oil is on (maximum) fire, put a lot of baking soda on it to stop the fire.
