I conspired with my pizza delivery driver

I was probably 9 or 10 when we got a new pizza place in town. I would always get excited when their delivery guy would show up because I loved pizza and it was always a nice break in my evening.

One time he commented that it smelled like pizza in our house because we ordered so much and he was there almost weekly.

The next time he came I asked him if pizza got old after a while and he said yes. I was shocked that anyone could get tired of pizza.

He looked at me with a sly grin and said, “you wouldn’t happen to want this pizza would you? I already got paid for it and I’m not a big fan of mushroom and onion.” I was so surprised he offered me a free pizza, but my parents taught me to always be kind and considerate of others so my first thought was that he was probably hungry and missed dinner to come do his job for not much money.

I told him I couldn’t take his dinner but if he wanted to come in and eat with me that would be ok. He was shocked but agreed.

We ate together and had a nice time talking. He was very kind and it was clear he was having a rough time.

I figured this was just a one time thing but the next time he came he said he had an extra pizza again and suggested we eat together.

This turned into a regular thing that went on for years. We would hang out occasionally and eat pizza.

I knew this was wrong. I didn’t tell my parents because I didn’t want to get him in trouble. I was too young to understand that he didn’t do anything wrong, it was the restaurant that was at fault for making the wrong order.

I loved doing it though.

Eventually pizza places came and went and I got older. I moved out and started ordering pizza from this place again.

I didn’t expect it, but when the delivery driver came to my door it was the same guy from years before.

He had moved up to manager and was just filling in because one of his employees called in sick.

I was amazed when he remembered me. We hugged like we were long lost friends and he thanked me for being kind to him all those years ago.

I still feel bad for not telling my parents but it was worth it because it was the best pizza party ever.
