I stole $10 from my collage in 2002, and have paid the price ever since.

I had a math problem in the morning class. I was so poor that I could not pay for the school’s parking. If I parked in the nearest lot, I was regularly fined for 10.00. I only had a single $10 for lunch on my way to work, and I was regularly running out of money.

One day, I parked in the lot next to a restaurant that I thought the University did not own. I was wrong. I got hit with a fine. I tried to call to pay the fine. They wanted to charge me 15.00 with a service fee. I argued that I did not have enough money to pay the fine. They would say that I was running out of time and that they would not send me my transcript if I did not pay. I argued again that I was a broke college student, and did not have the ability to pay the fine. They insisted.

I graduated in 2005. I had thousands of dollars of fines. I had to pay them to receive my diploma, which I did.

Fast-forward 18 years.

I recently had a brilliant idea for a startup. I decided to apply for a patent. I fished through my papers, and realized that I could not find my transcript. I had to send it to an attorney to prove my education.

I called the collage, and they sent me my transcript in the mail. It only cost 5.00 to get it emailed to me.

It feels good to pay back the fine. It really feels irresponsible to not pay it. I still think they should have worked with me in 2002.
