Every night, my girlfriend slaps on earplugs and a sleeping mask, closes the door, and doesn’t make a sound until the next morning. Tonight I plugged my own ears and opened the door to see why.

Nobody was there, but I heard my girlfriend’s voice on the other side of the door. It sounded like she was arguing with someone, and she didn’t sound happy.

I stepped inside and closed the door behind me, and the voice immediately stopped. It was pitch black because of the sleeping mask covering my eyes, but I’m positive that I felt a hand grab my shoulder. Then I heard my voice, but it wasn’t actually mine. It was deep and raspy and sent shivers down my spine. It sounded like this:

“Don’t come in here, you silly little bitch.sweetie, this is our time.”

I tried to struggle, but a strong pair of arms wrapped around me and held me in place. I heard my girlfriend’s voice whisper “no” in my ear, and then I felt a firm tug on my arm that made my entire body contort in ways that I didn’t think humans were capable of. I screamed in agony as I was flung across the room. I collided with something solid, and for a brief moment I could see a sliver of light where my sleeping mask shifted out of place. I caught a glimpse of my girlfriend and I know that it was her, it was her voice, and it was her face, but her eyes were black as coal and her skin was gray and decayed.

As fast as it started it was over. I was back in bed, and the sound of my girlfriend’s voice telling me that she loved me filled my ears. She gave a soft peck to my forehead and the light in the room flickered back on. When I opened my eyes and rubbed the sleep from them, I saw her smiling back at me, earplugs and sleeping mask still in place. She squeezed my hand and fell back asleep.

I knew right then that I was in over my head, but something about that demonic voice telling me that she was “ours” made me feel important. Maybe even a little special. So I put my arm around her, rolled over, and went back to sleep.
