I stole someone’s property and initially denied it. I lied to someone I really liked and they exposed me for it.

I was renting a king size mattress from someone with a really small, very thick mattress cover on it that barely fit the mattress. When it was time to give the mattress back, I had trouble getting it into the cover so I ripped it and instead of just dealing with it, I stole it from them and made up a lie to them about losing it. When I finally gave them the mattress, they found it had one of my torn mattress covers on it and asked me about it. I lied again and said that I had slept on it once but really didn’t. I ended up confessing that I liked them and was scared they would hate me for it and that’s why I lied. I don’t know what I was thinking but it really hurt me to lose them and it’s something I regret to this day. I was really stupid and immature at the time but because of my mistake it took a toll on my mental health and caused a wave of negative thoughts about myself because they were a better person than me and I ruined our friendship.
