$100-->$50 (legally)

My car was broken into last week and several hundred dollars worth of personal property was taken. This week I received a call from the police saying a suspect was in custody with my property on him. I had to come in to the station to identify it.

I thought there would be some sort of fee to pay to get my stuff back, but the nice officer said to me, "Oh, there's a fee to get your property back: it's $106."

This seemed like a lot of money. I complained about it, and he went to talk to his boss. He came back and said, "Yeah, the captain said he could waive $50--$56."

This is a LifeProTip because while I don't think I will ever have property stolen from me ever again, I will always know that while a certain fee may be required, there is often some wiggle room.
