I used to work at a grocery store as a stock clerk. At night I would go around with a dolly and collect what we call orphaned products, products that are unboxed and sitting on the shelves of the store with no barcode attached. A lot of the times it's a damaged product, or sometimes the tags fell off.

This helps us keep track of the inventory.

I was a pretty cool stock clerk. Every time i went out to collect orphans, I would always make sure to get a cart and walk around and collect as much as I could. A lot of other people would just go out for the specific items listed on the sheet.

Of course the items found would have to be charged down. That means the company takes a loss off the p&l.

I discovered potted herbs. Specifically thyme. I fucking love it. I always grow my own thyme.

So I would go out every night and find a bunch of the potted thyme. As long as it didn't have a tag, I could charge it down. It was my own way of getting to the company. I figure if I had to collect orphans, I would have to get some things the company didn't need to sell.

I ended up taking so much thyme that my friends, family, and coworkers would just come to me to get thyme.

I did this for over a year.

I quit that job and now I sell pots of thyme at a farmer's market. I have been doing this since 2008.
