I killed a cat with my shoe that is the only thing I think I’m truly ashamed of

It was 3 am in the middle of winter and I had to drive to work with a 15 minute commute with no car and I woke up late to get to work. I’m walking to the bus stop and this cat comes out of nowhere and starts hissing and growling at me, claws out and I’m thinking to myself “you’re really gonna stand your ground to the guy the same size as you right now? I’ve had cats my entire life and seen sick cats before and this one was not normal. Now being on a tight schedule and in all my winter gear I didn’t wanna have to go to the hospital since I didn’t know if I’d be late or no. So I defended myself, this cat was on the loose, no collar, outside, and underweight in the middle of winter. I worked in a grocery store and got home at 10 am. By 12 pm the day after I was cleaning the cats body from the walks of my neighborhood out of fear someone would pick it up alive and see the damage I’d done and call the police. I’m not sure if it was illegal to kill a stray cat like this but I didn’t want to risk it. I’ve never told anyone face to face this and I haven’t thought about this for years until a few days ago.
