I always stay away from rented cars’ backseats in case of something like this.

I was driving and picking up a hitchhiker. I was about to exit the highway when we reached my off-ramp and then I hit the brakes and swerved to the left. As I saw a person standing in the middle of the road, I hit the brakes again and swerved to the right. The hitchhiker hugged me and said please don’t die for me.

I thought he was insane.

After a while, I turned back to look at him. He wasn’t in the car. Then I looked back and saw him walking in the middle of the road while waving at me. I hit the brakes and swerved to the left. A person was standing on the right side of the road. His facial expression was pure shock as he screeched to a halt right next to me.

He was dead. He looked at me and mouthed, “It didn’t work.”

I hit the brakes and swerved to the left again. A person was standing in the middle of the road. I thought it was the hitchhiker again but it was another man. I wasn’t sure, but he looked familiar.

I hit the brakes again. A person was standing on the right side of the road. He looked familiar too. I wasn’t sure but he might be the guy from the second accident. A chill ran down my spine.

I hit the brakes again and another person was standing in the middle. There was no one next to me. I swerved to the left and no one was there. I realized he fooled me to kill another person.

I swerved to the right. A person was standing. I hit the brakes. There was no one in the road. It was a nightmare and I was in a loop. I thought to myself, “I can leave the car right here.” I opened the door, but my hand stopped right before reaching the door handle. I saw it. I saw my hand hovering over the door handle. My head didn’t move, but I could see my hand. I was in shock. But that was because I was driving my car. This was my view.

I was the hitchhiker. This was my view. This was the view of the hitchhiker from my car. My mind was racing. I was looking at the stitches of the steering wheel. I saw the guy from my right side from the first time I hit the brakes. He was standing on the road. I swerved to the left. Then I realized the button on the door. The seat adjustment. I clicked it. My head turned and I was looking at my side.

There was no one next to me. It was impossible. I had to make a choice. But I had to know. What is the view from the other seat? What am I going to see if I swerve to the right and not the left?

I clicked the button again. My head turned back, and I saw my side again. I could see the stitches of the door. But I had to look at the road.

I clicked the button again. My head turned right. The road was empty. There wasn’t a person. I clicked the button again and it stopped. Nothing. I looked at the road. The highway was empty and no one was standing.

I clicked and my head turned back toward the road. Then I saw it. A person was standing in the middle of the road. That view. That side. Another view was possible, and I realized that you can’t see everything.
