When I was a kid, my dad was overseas in the army and I answered his phone call pretending to be my mother and he did not realize it until I started talking about my kindergarten class.

Now I’m in my 30’s and I still feel like this is one of the funniest things I’ve ever done. First, some backstory.

My mom, dad, and I moved to a small town in Iowa when I was in preschool so that we could be near my grandparents if my dad was deployed. Even though my father was not called to serve, we decided to stay in this small town anyway.

When I was in kindergarten, my dad went on training exercises for a couple of months and stationed in Texas. During this time my mom and I were on our own in Iowa.

At this time in my life, I was starting to get interested in playing pretend. I liked to play pretend kitchen and store and stuffed animals and the like. I also was starting to realize that my dad kind of had a hard time telling my voice and my mom's voice apart over the phone. That is to say, he wasn't the best at it. Obviously as a five year old who likes to play pretend, this was a challenge. I decided to test his capacity to differentiate between the two.

I asked my mom if I could answer the phone the next time my dad called and pretend to be her. She said it was okay, but if he figured it out I had to stop.

So when my dad called, I answered and said in my best adult voice, “Hello?” My dad said, “Hey honey, how did it go today?” Then I, still in my grown up voice, replied, “It went well. I sold a lot of Tupperware at the party.” I don’t think it even took a full second for him to realize it was me. He laughed and said, “You are not your mother.” I said, “I know, I’m just pretending. She’s in the other room.” I fully expected my mom to come and take the phone from me at that, but she didn't. I was starting to get a little confused as to why she didn’t come if he found out. The conversation went on for about ten minutes before she did come over. When she did, she said, “Hi honey, how are you doing?” I was confused and asked her why she took the phone. She said it was because my dad was starting to get upset. I asked why and she said it was because I had been lying to him. Then I asked, “But didn’t he figure it out when I said I sold Tupperware at a party?” And she said no. He thought I was just making it up as a joke and didn’t realize until I started talking about having to color inside the lines during art in kindergarten class.

Thanks for the gold y'all. I appreciate it.
