"I'll die on this hill" is such a weird phrase

Its an acknowledgement that youre probably wrong but you're going to argue and stand by the point you're trying to make regardless of how badly your stance is about to be torched. Its not a lot of fun sounding to die in such a manner. Why is that a thing?
