I got my family evicted by playing my bongos too loudly

I live in Washington state. It was 2014, my family and I had just moved into a 2 story 4 bedroom apartment. My parents had a room, my two brothers had a room, and my sister and I shared another. I was 14, my brothers were 9 and 10, my sister was 16. For context my family is Hispanic, my parents are divorced and it was my dads turn to have us for the year. I have a very big extended family and we all live in the same town. My dad is somewhat of a shithead in the way that he always goes for the path of least resistance and had a hard time saying no, this meant we often had company staying with us.

About a month after moving in, my dads sisters daughter and her family had their trailer burn down due to their 4 year old boy playing with matches. (This was 100% the kids fault, they never grew tired of telling him not to play with matches, lighters, fire crackers, or open flames) her husband was too lazy to find a job and she worked at the same store as my dad, she was also 8 months pregnant with their 3rd. So they moved in with us. The 1st and 4 year old slept with my sister and I. The 2 year old slept with my parents. I never found out where the mother and dad slept but I think it was on the living room couch. This was in June of that year and they stayed with us through the fall. Throughout that summer the woman would call out of work about 2/3 of the time, and I only saw the husband leave the apartment once to go to the grocery store. He would play video games with my dad all day while my dad was supposed to be at work. I saw him do chores only twice and the way he interacted with his kids was terrible. He treated my brothers like they were his punching bag. So I couldn’t stand the guy.

Christmas of that year my dad got evicted. The reason being that the 4 year old burned all the hair off his my younger brothers head by holding him down on the living room couch and setting his hair on fire. I had been skipping school often to avoid my houses new occupants. So I wasn’t there when this occurred but my brother told me about it later on in life.

This is where I come in. Now 5 months prior to the event my dad had bought me a drum set for my birthday. But he didn’t buy me the Drum set until March, and in the time between January and March I didn’t have anything to do with my hands. Till one day I found some rubber tubs in the garage, so I turned them into a makeshift set of bongos. I would practice them whenever I was at home. This was a problem because the aunt and uncle wouldn’t let me leave the house in the morning with them there because “I needed to be there in case the kids needed anything”. So I would play my bongos to pass the time. This was a problem for the uncle because he would always sleep in until noon.

One day he yelled at me for waking him up so I stopped, but only for the day. I played them the next day and got yelled at again. I stopped playing them for a month but started playing them again. I played them every day that following summer until the day we moved out. So one day I come home from school early because of a soccer game I wasn’t aware of and the uncle is already awake and I don’t know what to do. So I grab my bongos and go to the park. I’m sitting there under the shade of a big tree listening to music and practicing my rhythm on my bongos.

After a while I get bored and decide I’m gonna go home and try to walk in quietly but the uncle hears me and tells me “oh good you’re here now, watch the kids. I’m going to play some video games with your dad.” I was interested in why my dad was home at that time of day but figured he just took off work early.

I proceeded to do nothing but lay in my bed while the kids ran around until my dad walked in and started yelling at me for not watching the kids. I told him I thought he was off work anyway and he told me that he got fired because the uncle called his boss in and told him that he smelled weed on my dad’s breath. I was like “what? Why would you do that?” he said I left him hungover with his kids and he was in pain so my dad had given him a little weed to feel better. He had a field sobriety test and got sent home and might get fired. The uncle told my dad that he never would have smelled the weed if I had been there to look after his kids.

This caused a chain reaction of events. My dad lost his job and couldn’t pay rent. He moved in with his sister, as did I and my siblings. But this was only temporary because we lived with his sister for another year. The apartment company found out my dad had 6 additional people living with him plus the 5 of us and that my dad was selling weed. The apartment company took my dad to court and won. My dad was in debt so they took money out of his sisters bank account. This caused her to lose her house. So my family lived with her again until our apartment lease was up and she could get another house. My aunt spent almost 2 years homeless because of how much my dad owed. She couldn’t get another place to live until my dad paid back the money that was taken from her. This is my entire life story so far.

EDIT; I think it’s obvious I didn’t write this as a confession. I’m not sorry that my family was evicted. I’m just sharing my story of why.
