I’m a nurse and deliberately chose the sharpest needles for my difficult patients

I work in the ER and it’s not uncommon to have patients make a scene about needles. They’ll say they’re scared of needles and don’t want one, but then claim that they need the pain relief it brings with it. Usually they want to avoid the needles, but want to keep the medication. We’ll try to explain to them that one has to come with the other and if they want the pain relief, they need the needle. Some will argue, some will get violent. It’s exhausting having to deal with these kinds of patients. So one day one of my coworkers came up with a game. Since these patients want to make it hard for us, we should make it harder for them. We should use the most painful needles possible for the most difficult patients, in the hopes of scaring them so they never come back. I know it’s unprofessional and I’m not particularly proud of it, and I only did it a couple of times, but I just want to admit it to someone.
