I stole a car

My dad is driving me up to New York tomorrow for orientation. He then returns home with my brothers and I stay behind up there. My brother has a parking pass for the dorm where I park, but I returned to the dorm, and about 1/4 of the parking lot was blocked off. This made the situation worse. I had no way of knowing if it was legal in the first place since I had just arrived. I thought about parking in a visitor spot, but 1) It's 6:30 AM 2) I was feeling anxious and pissy and just wanted to park and go to bed, and I was just going to move it in the morning.

So I parked in the first available spot. It was near the entrance, but there was a placard on the post in front of it that said "President". I don't think it's a parking spot. I don't think anybody even parks there. I had no idea if I was in the right since it was 6:30 AM and it was still dark and only a couple people were around.

A couple hours later when I woke up to go to my first orientation event, my brother texted me and said I got a ticket. I felt like shit. I get here, and there is a ticket on the car, and a note saying "Car is locked out. Call [phone number] at [time] for more info." I get the ticket, and sure enough, "President".

I look at the ticket, and it has a bigass fine on it. The fine is for parking in a reserved spot. I call up the college parking people, and they say I have to come talk to them. I go and tell them, "I didn't know it was a spot, I thought it was just a placard with the word President", and they tell me while yes, it is a spot, they'll only impound the car, but the fine is off.

They also give me a parking pass so that I don't have to worry about it. This is just the beginning of my college life, and I already fucked it up. I just hope they don't tell my dad.

EDIT: an update for those interested. I did indeed face a punishment for this, but only from a discipline council. It was my first and only offense, and the dean of students just made sure I knew the rules, and said I'm a college student, so I have to act like one. This hasn't affected my scholarships, my standing with college, or my parents' relationship with me. My dad did ask about the ticket, but I played it off by saying it was a misunderstanding, but I got off with a warning. That was almost a year ago now, and I'm still going strong.
