I woke up in the middle of the night and the man next to me wasn’t my husband

This happened in 2003, but it feels like it just happened yesterday. I’m glad I have a new platform to share this story on as it is pretty scary.

My husband and I had flown to California from Chicago on 10/23/2003 to visit our friends that live in Fremont, CA. We planned on staying with them from 10/23/2003-10/26/2003. We arrived at SFO airport and were picked up by our friends who drove us to their new home they had recently purchased.

During the drive, I couldn’t help but notice how hilly and mountainous it was. The houses also seemed nice and new, so I thought our friends had done well for themselves. We were very excited to spend time with them and explore the Bay Area.

We arrived at their home and noticed they had a swimming pool. This excited me as I love to swim. My husband and I also noticed there were a lot of pine trees in the neighborhood. For some reason, that stuck out to me. We got to their home at around 7:00 PM local time, so it was already dark.

That night, we hung out at their home and had some drinks. My husband and I were sharing their youngest son’s room (he was 6 years old at the time). We went to bed at around 11:00 PM and everything seemed normal. I remember getting into bed and drifting off to sleep.

The next thing I knew, I was in bed and it was dark. I felt a man’s arms around me, but it wasn’t my husband. This man was much bigger and heavier than my husband. He also smelled completely different. My husband has a very distinct smell that is just a natural human smell, but nice. This man smelled completely different and I could tell it wasn’t my husband.

When I realized this man wasn’t my husband, I was in complete panic. I didn’t want to start screaming because the only reasonable conclusion was that my husband was dead and this man had taken his place. I didn’t want this man to know I was awake.

I slowly slid out of bed without making a noise, and was completely naked. I don’t know how this man ended up in bed with me, or how he got me naked, but I think the answer is obvious. He must have drugged me or something when I was drinking and then he came into the room and did his thing. I don’t know for sure if he raped me or not (I never had an EKG or anything done), but I can’t see why he would get me naked unless he raped me.

Once out of bed, I tip-toed to the door and slowly opened it. I looked both ways and there was no one out there. I proceeded down the hall and entered the room my friend slept in. My friend was sleeping, but when she heard me enter, she woke up. I whispered to her that there is a man in the bed with me and it’s not my husband.

She immediately got out of bed and we both tip-toed to the kitchen. Once in the kitchen, my friend slowly opened the back door and we proceeded outside where she called the police. I was literally shaking like a leaf and was terrified something bad had happened to my husband.

The police arrived quickly and searched the home. They found my husband’s dead body on the hill in the neighbor’s yard. He was face down in the fetal position, and a broken vodka bottle was next to him. The police said he looked like he fell down the hill and broke the vodka bottle when he hit the ground. There were no smashed windows or anything like that to indicate someone broke into the house. The only thing they found was a piece of my husband’s shirt on one of the pointy fence posts that go around the swimming pool.

They never found any drugs in my husband’s system, but they did find that he was very drunk. His BAC was 0.33 when they did the autopsy. They ruled his death as an accident, but they never found any explanation for how he ended up on the hill with that much alcohol in his system.

I think the man who was in bed with me must have somehow gotten my husband drunk to the point that he fell over the fence and down the hill. I’m just glad I was able to wake up and get out of there. This is definitely a nightmare that I will never forget.
