My birthday sucked.

Today was my birthday. 17, junior year, first year driving. I had no plans to do anything and I was ok with that, because I’m sort of an introvert and I find that I don’t get along well with people. But my best friend said, “Hey, I’m taking you out to breakfast.” I said, “Awesome, thanks!” So yesterday, I text her and say, “Hey, I heard there’s a lot of COVID in my town.” She said, “Nah, there’s not too much. Don’t worry about it.” I agreed, not wanting to seem paranoid, but still being a bit nervous about the whole thing.

So this morning, she comes to my house. I’m already dressed and ready to go, with my mask on. She gets to my house, and I realize she’s not wearing a mask. I’m instantly annoyed, but figure I’ll just go inside the restaurant and worry about it later. We end up having a really nice time, but then, we’re leaving, and she’s like, “Oh, do you want to go to the mall to shop?” I’m not a fan of malls, but I don’t want to seem like a party pooper, so I agree. Then she drops the bomb on me, “Oh, by the way, I got a rapid test yesterday and I’m positive.” I’m furious. I’m in shock. I’m angry. I ask her, “Why didn’t you tell me this earlier? Do you not care about infecting other people?” She said, “I didn’t think it was a big deal. And I didn’t think you’d freak out.” I said, “I’m not freaking out, I’m just angry.” Then I stop and think about it. This is my birthday. I really wanted to spend time with her. So I said, “Fine. Let’s go to the mall.” We go. We’re there for a few hours, gossiping, laughing, and having the time of my life. I was actually having fun. I started to forget that I might get sick, and she was really sweet to me the whole time.

Then she said, “Oh, can we go to the mall coffee shop?” I said, “Sure, why not?” We get there, and she orders 2 drinks. At this point, I’m really annoyed again, because I don’t drink coffee. I asked her, “Why didn’t you ask me what I wanted?” And she said, “Oh, I thought you wanted the same as me.” I’m like, “No.” So she asks, “What drink do you want?” I say, “Uh, a vanilla frappuccino, or something.” And she’s like, “Oh, that’s so bland. I’m going to get you an extra pump of caramel.” I stop and think about how extra caramel would not be what I wanted, but I just say, “Okay.” Then I think, wait, she’s positive, we’re in a coffee shop, she’s ordering 2 drinks and putting her sick hands all over the coffee machine. I ask the coffee barista, “Hey, do you guys ever sanitize the coffee machines?” And she’s like, “No, we don’t.” I go, “Aw man. Happy birthday to me.”

Then my birthday gets even better, and my best friend orders herself a cookie. I’m like, “Hey, it’s my birthday. You got me 2 celebratory drinks, shouldn’t I get a cookie?” And she says, “No.” Then, she eats the cookie in front of me. I leave the mall with her. We get back to my car, she hugs me, and she says, “Happy birthday. I’m glad we had fun today.” I say, “Yeah, me too. Thanks.” And then I drive off. Now I sit here in my room, wondering if I’m going to get sick. I also wonder if my friends giving a shit about me.

Edit: Wow, y’all. Thanks for the birthday wishes and the support. I really appreciate it. Also, the update: I got my test results today. I’m negative. But, I’m still a bit sick. It’s absurdly cold outside, and my friends house is cold, so I’m blaming that :). Seriously though, thanks for everything.
