My son’s ex-teacher somehow ended up in our backyard in the middle of the night.

A year ago or so, my son got a new teacher. This teacher was fresh out of school and had just started with his very first job. He was new to the area and was clearly a bit lonely. I remember my son’s classmates parents asking him out for a drink on several occasions (they were a group of friends and always went out together for a beer each week). Anyways, the teacher declined with the excuse that he didn’t think it was professionally right to fraternize with parents. (And I couldn’t agree more.) He was a nice all-around guy and did a fantastic job as a teacher. My son loved his class and they all had a great time.

We hadn’t heard from him in months until my husband woke up in the middle of the night to our dog barking furiously. This is extremely unusual as our dog doesn’t bark a lot. It’s just not in his personality. Anyways, my husband looks at the alarm and realizes that the motion light in our backyard has come on. He’s wondering what the hell could cause the dog to bark so much and looks through the window and this is where it gets weird. There in our backyard is the ex-teacher. Just…walking around. And it’s 3 am. My husband is wondering wtf and runs through all the possibilities in his head. Has he always been in the backyard? Did he break in? What is he even doing here at this hour? Does he know my husband is watching?

My husband decides to wake me up and tells me to go check on the kids while he calls the police. Then…nothing happens. The teacher just stands there. Eventually, he sits down on a bench we have under a willow tree. Still, nothing happens. My husband says he had no idea what the hell to do (it was 3 am, luaaa) but after the teacher sat down, he got impatient and went to ask what in the actual hell he was doing.

The teacher was genuinely confused. Looking around at the yard and up at the house. Not responding when my husband asked what he was doing. Eventually he looked at my husband and said something along the lines of “How did I get here? Was I driving?” And my husband is like “were you driving? Did you drive here?” And the teacher said he had no clue. He didn’t remember driving or anything at all. Then he said “Why is it so cold?” He was only wearing a sweater and jeans. No shoes or socks, but my husband figured he had been driving barefoot. Anyways, my husband is still not sure what to do. Should he call the police? No, the teacher doesn’t seem to be drunk or under the influence of anything. He doesn’t seem threatening. He’s just confused. So my husband asks the teacher if he needed help to get home or anything. The teacher just kept looking around the yard and asking if he could have driven here. If he had parked the car somewhere. If he had been walking. Then he said he lived in a completely different part of town (he commuted to work). Eventually my husband was just too tired and told him to come inside and wait til morning. So they came inside and my husband gave him some pajamas and made him sleep in our guest room. Then he came back to bed and shook me awake and told me all this. I was super groggy and thought it was some weird fever dream so I just went back to sleep thinking it would be gone in the morning. But it wasn’t. When I came downstairs the teacher was sitting at the kitchen table. My husband was making coffee and the teacher was just sitting there, looking at the coffee table (which had absolutely nothing on it). He didn’t even notice when I came into the room. He looked like he was in some sort of daze. My husband told me to figure it out so I went and sat across from him and asked if everything was ok. He didn’t answer so I asked if he remembered anything from last night. He shook his head but didn’t look up. So I said “nothing at all?” And he said “I was in a forest”. I asked him what he was doing in the forest and he said “hiking”. I asked when this was and he said “I don’t know”. So I told him not to worry. I said he could have been out hiking yesterday and it just hadn’t registered with him yet. Then I made him a cup of coffee and he looked up at me and asked me who I was. He looked genuinely confused and a bit frightened (like you would expect from someone who just woke up in a strange woman’s house. I told him my name and said that I was the mother of a boy he used to teach. My husband said it was a boy in his class last year and the teacher started to look a little clearer. He looked around the house (it was 7 now so it was fairly light outside) and said “I don’t remember how I got here. Did we have a school camping trip yesterday? Because I don’t remember it”. So I told him to not worry about it and stay for breakfast with us. He finally started to look a little clearer when he realized it was Sunday and they didn’t have school the next day. He offered to go home after breakfast and said he would take an Uber. My husband said it was fine, he could drive him if he wanted. The teacher said he didn’t want to bother us any more than he already had and my husband told him it was fine and no bother. So my husband drove him home later. The teacher’s car was parked in his driveway so clearly he had driven himself there.

Anyway, he clearly doesn’t remember anything and my husband doesn’t see the point in telling him. It’s not like it matters. But it’s still so weird. What the actual hell happened?
