Did the Mongols really burn cities to the ground and kill everyone whenever they invaded somewhere?

Whenever I read about the Mongols it always says something like, “they burned city X to the ground and killed everyone” or “they laid waste to city Y and its inhabitants.”<br><br>To me it doesn’t make sense that they would conquer territories just to burn and waste all the potential resources.
