A lot of people here are defending AI because it's seen as a revolutionary force against the wealthy and corporations, but there's no evidence that will actually happen.

A lot of people in the comments are like "we need to explore this technology to free ourselves from these huge corporations and the wealthy!"

This is a pretty nonsense position to take, but I think I can explain why.

1. Large corporations are the ones doing the most to develop AI. Companies like Google, Meta, and Microsoft are working with governments around the world who have billions of dollars to throw at this technology. They have access to more data, more talent, and more funding than any private individual or small group of people could have. There's no evidence that anyone else can compete with their level of technological capability.

2. The amount of resources required to develop this technology is so large that historians and social scientists have compared it to nuclear weapons. Only the most wealthy and technologically advanced countries have even been able to get nuclear weapons. It will be much harder for an individual to get access to AI than to get access to chemistry to make a bomb.

3. The governments of the world aren't going to let individual people get access to this technology. There's a lot of evidence to show this already. The US military has been lobbying for laws to be passed to ban non-commercial AI development, and similar laws are getting discussed in other jurisdictions as well. The military is afraid that AI is going to be missed, but governments are also afraid that the public could use AI to escape their surveillance and control. Governments are banning development of AI because of security and privacy concerns, but these laws aren't going to stop the corporations or the military from developing and experimenting with this technology. They're going to ban individual people from developing it and then use their own AI on us.

In summary, corporations are going to be the ones who will get to develop and use AI, not individual people. There are tons of evidence for this and tons of evidence to show that governments are going to want to control this technology for themselves. There's no reason to expect that this technology is going to create some kind of revolution that will defeat governments and corporations all over the world.
