I'm sure most of you guys have heard the term "responsible gun owner". While it's a term I personally wouldn't use to describe gun ownership, I can confidently say that my wife and I are responsible gun owners.

Over the last 18 months, I took my wife from being afraid and uninterested in guns to actively seeking out our concealed carry licenses, changing her major to criminal justice, and eventually she even bought herself an AR-15 because she enjoyed shooting it so much. It was awesome to see the growth of her confidence and interest in the subject.

Recently, she and I both received permits for carry from our state government. We also read the rules and regulations of carry, and are well aware of the laws in both our state, and in a neighboring state that we often travel to.

My wife is a college student and is currently finishing up her last year of her bachelors degree. She drives from home to school on Monday mornings, and then drives back home on Friday evenings. This is nearly a 4 hour drive each way. She always carries on her drives because she is an adult, has a license to do so, and she feels safer.

The school she attends has a "no guns policy". For the sake of her grade and to not get kicked out of school, she follows the rules and locks up her gun in the safe in her car, and leaves it on campus in the parking lots for the day if she drives. On the other hand, the campus has been rocked with high profile break-ins, sexual assault, and the like, with minimal police presence. My wife being "the self defense type", she carries pepper spray, a knife, and a taser in her bag while she walks on campus to classes and to her car from 7am-10pm usually.

The school has been notified of the dangers. They still do nothing to protect their students.

This year, I sold a gun to a guy I met on one of the gun groups. I showed him my permit. He showed me his permit. He bought the gun, and then I never heard of him again. At least, I never heard of him again until I got a call from the local sheriff's office saying they were going to take my gun permit. I was taken aback and asked what was going on. Apparently, this guy I sold the gun to is not legally allowed to possess firearms for the next 5 years because of a misdemeanor offense that he committed. Obviously, I didn't know this when I sold him the gun, and obviously he lied about any firearms restrictions. Yet, somehow my permit was to be revoked?

I was told that this would be an 18 month process before the decision was made, and I should hire a lawyer if I cared to keep my permit.

Fast forward a few months, my wife got a call from the local sheriff's office saying they were going to take her gun permit as well. We were both confused, until they told her about me losing my permit and that since we live in the same household, she is also in violation.

Let me reiterate that my wife and I are responsible gun owners. We have never had an incident with our firearms. We are well aware of the laws surrounding our ownership. We do not drink/drink and carry/do drugs/do not carry recklessly. We have NEVER been in a situation in which our guns were a danger to society, and have NEVER been in trouble with the law.

Despite all this, we are being forced to defend ourselves so they can force us to give up a right that we've chosen to practice, and to potentially put ourselves in danger.

Today, I'm calling lawyers to see if I can continue the process of trying to keep our permits. Frankly, I don't have the money to do this. I don't have the time to do this. I'm already working 65 hours a week at my job, while also trying to finish up my degree. I don't have the time to take my wife and I to court, and I don't have the money to hire an attorney. The stress of the situation is already getting to me.

I feel like I am being kicked while already down. I feel like my rights are being dragged through the dirt, and then stomped on.

I have never been so disappointed in my government.
