Bad economy? I just got off the phone with a recruiter for a tech job and here’s my “story”.

Something in the air just makes me feel that this is the end of things … the bubble is bursting, tech companies are firing left and right, people are losing their jobs. Well, i guess you could say the market is correcting. I just got a call from a recruiter at Amazon (I’ve been unemployed for 3 months). I was feeling pretty hopeless but not anymore. Over and over the recruiter emphasized that if I wanted to make the cut, I had to have a strong portfolio or an extremely strong network. I’m an immigrant and I didn’t have any connections so I went with the portfolio route. I was prepared to take the time and invest in myself. And then I got a call back, it’s time to go back to work. I don’t know if it’s just luck, the hiring manager had a funny feeling about me, or the bubble is just taking a nap.

Edit: wow! Thanks for the kind words everyone. I didn’t expect this at all, everyone stay positive and keep grinding. If you’re recruiting, be nice and treat everyone equal, you never know who you’re talking to. It’s hard to tell from a chambers post but I’m a minority and a woman so I can imagine that the recruiter may have treated me nicer because of who I am. Happy holidays everyone!
