I just posted a world map that I put a lot of time into. It has a lot of details, like names for every country, city, sea, and river, but also information on what (if any) magic each area has.

I, for example, no longer feel a generic "it's just very cold" approach to a fantasy nation, but rather having a bunch of different reasons why they are cold (like an ice wasteland, a sea that is frozen year round with no land nearby, a climate similar to that of Canada, or a climate similar to that of the Andes).

I also no longer feel happy with a generic "it's extremely hot" approach. Many of my countries have desert biomes, but the heats are all different (some extremely hot, some just warm, some extremely dry, some extremely wet, some with practically no sand, and some with over half sand).

Another example of this is with magic. I have many different forms of magic in my world and no nation has no magic.

I have countries with magic that can be used anywhere (but can perhaps be influenced by the landscape), countries with magic that is only available in certain locations, and countries with magic that is only available at certain times. I also have countries with magic that is available, but only to one or a few people in the country. I have countries where magic is used by everybody, and countries where nobody is allowed to use magic. I have countries that have a lot of magical creatures, and countries where magic and magical creatures are quite rare.

I have countries that have performed large feats of engineering, and countries that have done nothing. And I have countries that have built a lot of magical items, and countries that have built very few.
