So yeah, the kids tattled on me to the principal. I got in a little trouble. I told the principal every damn thing the kids said.

The background is this: I teach HS history in a charter school that is most definitely right-leaning. In fact, my history curriculum was definitely written by a conservative.

We were supposed to watch a documentary called "the Search for Liberty: Pursuit of Happiness" which was every bit as right leaning as the title sounds. It was all about how the kids need to take charge of their own destiny and happiness because the government won't give it to them. It made a few good points, like how you choose to look at life and how your choices affect you. But overall, it was very Ayn Rand-y and talked a lot about minimal government.

I told the kids to watch the video, take the survey, and then we'll talk. During our discussion, I asked them to give me some critiques of the video. They said the video made some points that sounded like "Republican talking points" and I agreed with them and then unloaded a list of as many biases as I could find. I told them it was very libertarian, a philosophy I very much do not prescribe to.

One of the students asked me my opinion on libertarians and I told them I think their policies would cause suffering to the most vulnerable in society. I said we need to have a social safety net to protect the most vulnerable.

Well, yesterday some parents called me saying that their kid told them I unloaded on Trump and the Republicans and bashed libertarians. I told them exactly what I said and that it was after the kids had brought it up. I said we were critiquing the documentary, not the kids opinions. I offered to share the documentary with them and they could see for themselves.

The principal called me this morning and asked me if it was true that I bashed Republicans. I said yes, it's true. I did. But first the kids brought it up, and second, the documentary was filled with Republican talking points. I then proceeded to list all the ways I found the documentary to be biased.

The principal agreed with me that the video was terrible, but said the kids didn't "bring it up." I told him I had a very different story from the kids and if he wanted to hear it, I'd be happy to tell. He said yes, please.

I told him everything the kids said, from calling the video "Republican" to asking if I was libertarian. I then launched into a scathing critique of the curriculum that called the creators "idiots." I went very harsh on them (imo, deservedly so). I told the principal I was going to write the company a very scathing letter and that I was going to encourage the kids to do the same.

The principal laughed and told me to change the curriculum. He also said to write the letter, but maybe tone it down a bit.
