Google stands firm against Australia making it pay for news<br><br>The search giant is threatening to pull its search engine if a controversial media code becomes law.<br><br>The code would force Google and Facebook to pay outlets for their journalism.<br><br>Google Australia's managing director Mel Silva addressed the Senate Committee in Canberra on Friday and said the laws were "unworkable".<br><br>"If this version of the code were to become law, it would give us no real choice but to stop making Google Search available in Australia," she said.<br><br>But Google also offered an alternative plan to the proposed code. <br><br>Ms Silva said Google made a commitment to the code's key principles - that Google should pay Australian news businesses for generating value for search.<br><br>Earlier this week, Google threatened to pull out of Australia if it was forced to share ad revenue with media companies.<br><br>That would follow the likes of Yahoo! and Bing.
