Tried to stop myself from impulse buying an entire kitchen appliance store.

Hiya, I'm new here but working hard on moving towards a minimalist lifestyle. I've mostly stopped buying things I don't need lately, especially after my sister made me promise not to buy anything for the rest of 2023. But today I almost slipped up.

I just made a VERY detailed list of every single thing I need to make the kitchen perfect for the next several years. I'm honestly never planning on moving out again, so I want to take my time to get all the right things. You can see this list below.

I went to my absolute favorite store in the world, Williams-Sonoma, because it's the only store I'll shop at (the quality is crazy good!), and they have one of everything I need.

So now, to the almost-slipping-up part. As I'm working my way through the list, I notice that Williams-Sonoma has a 50% off deal. Fifty! This is huge, as they rarely have discounts.

So I think to myself, hot damn, I should just get all the stuff on the list now, even the stuff I don't need yet, because I will need it eventually, and if I get it now it will cost me much less money and I can just throw that money I saved towards the rest of the stuff on the list. I can just live with all the items in the pantry for the next 2 years before I use them, but with the discount I will be able to get all the cooking stuff I need, plus all the storage, plus a fucking stand mixer. And I honestly don't have a savings fund so this is my only chance to get the stand mixer. And I will be able to live with the stainless steel cookware for the next 5 years before I get the cast iron stuff, and while stainless steel cookware is not the best material for cookware, at least it's not nonstick/bad quality material. And I will be able to live with a few extra things on my pantry shelves for the next 5 years to make sure I don't miss out on the discount and the chance to save money and get everything I need.

I swear I'm not crazy. It just took me personally so long to get myself to stop buying all the things, and not to mention learning how to cook. I've worked so hard to get all the different things I've accumulated so far and I don't want to lose sight of my goals. It's been so hard for me to get to where I am now.

And then my sister calls me and asks me what I'm doing. I tell her I'm at Williams-Sonoma with the list and I'm thinking of just buying all the stuff on the list. She asks me why, and I explain my whole reasoning to her, and I can hear in her voice that she is trying to bite back laughter while she listens. I can see the almost-smiling humor in her face when she walks up to me with the phone still to her ear. Her smile is always so beautiful to me, and I feel comforted almost right away.

I hand her the phone and walk out of the store with my list, and we walk back to my apartment and order the only things I need right now.

Here is my list:

- new cooking utensils (silicone is hot garbage, I need one more spatula and two spoons)

- garlic press (my old one was actually garbage, I was going to throw it out anyway)

- magic blender (I know it's called an immersion blender but I have a normal blender so I call this the magic blender because I can blend the sauce right in the pot)

- round cake pan (not needed yet, but it's a vital staple for all recipes)

- silicone baking mats (needed)

- aluminum cookie sheets (needed)

- 9x13 baking dish (lost it, needed)

- mixing bowls (my old ones are trash, I need a few more)

- measuring spoons (I have two sets, I need a third)

- measuring cups (needed)

- spices (I need way more, I'm still learning how to cook and I haven't hitten all the common ones yet)

- salt (new brand, preferably kosher salt because the quality and flavor is much better than normal salt)

- reusable straws (I lost one)

- kitchen twine (just used all of it for the brined turkey)

- new pots and pans (my old ones are nonstick and garbage)

- cooking oil bottle and funnel (my old funnel is made of a hard plastic and is garbage)

- extra water glasses (my old ones are hard plastic and garbage)

- white wine (for the risotto, can't get store brand wine anymore) (needed)

- pink wine (for the risotto, can't get store brand wine anymore) (needed)

- heavy-duty stand mixer (not needed yet, but vital for every recipe, I've been borrowing one from my sister the last two times I needed it)

- wicker basket for the coffee/tea cabinet (needed)

- storage bins for the pantry (needed)

- hanging spice organizer (needed)

- rice cooker (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- slow cooker (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- electric kettle (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- instant pot or air fryer or pressure cooker (not needed yet, I need to get the last three things on this list before I know which of these three things I will want)

- grill (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- cooler (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- cast-iron cookware (my old ones are lost/broken, all my cookware is currently stainless steel)

- cast-iron stove (I need a new stove, I'm still renting one)

- baking dishes (I need a few that are different sizes, not trash quality)

- serving dishes (I need a few that are different sizes, not trash quality)

- serving utensils (I need two spoons, not trash quality)

- round serving bowls (I need two, not trash quality)

- wire baking racks (I need two, not trash quality)

- knife set (my old ones are garbage, I need a fourth knife for the knife block)

- mixing utensils (my old ones are garbage, but I don't think I need new ones right now)

- storage for the mixing utensils (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- storage for pots/pans (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- mixing pitcher (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- wine pitcher (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- storage for the wine glasses (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- coffee maker (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- stand-up blender (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- toaster (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- coffee bean grinder (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- kettle (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- storage for the coffee machine and stuff (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- cookie jars (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- Full set of fine dishes (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- full set of wine glasses (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- set of tumblers (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)

- set of champagne glasses (not needed yet, but will get to that eventually)
