Why did it take me 28 years to learn that I should have an emergency savings fund?

Blatantly obvious in hindsight. But I never thought about it growing up. My parents never pushed me to save. <br><br>I like to imagine that if I ever have kids, I'll be the cool dad, who'll teach them about stocks, bonds, and compound interest. But for now I'll just have to be the one learning.
