I (29F) and my boyfriend (29M) have been together a long time and we got really good at giving each other presents because we understood each other so well. At Christmas, a bunch of the older people in his family were like “wait, you got [boyfriend] a present? I have no idea what to get him.” It was kind of fun to be the girlfriend in the family who always knew what to get her boyfriend for Christmas.

I really went all out one year and spent a lot of time making him customised photo album for Christmas. He was really into photography and it was a project I was really proud of.

I packaged it in a plain white box and wrapped it with a card and a handwritten note that read “you’re my forever home”.

When he opened presents on Christmas, he did not open this one. He just tossed it into a box of things he would open later.

I go to visit at his apartment and I check drawers looking for the album. It’s not there. I check the box of presents he didn’t open. It’s not there.

I’m starting to get a little mad and I’m like “where did you put that album I gave you?”

“Album? I got you one of those sand hourglasses for Christmas, did you mean that?”

“No! I made you an album and spent a long time on it. I thought you were just keeping it in a drawer.”

“What present are you talking about?”

“Well you know that year I gave you the little white box and the card that said you’re my forever home?”

“I’m sorry, what?”

Turns out he never opened any of my presents from that year from now on.

I’m so depressed and angry and resentful. I spend hours of my time on him and he can’t even do the bare minimum.

I’m so angry. I’m starting to think he’s the worst boyfriend ever.

That was in December 2019. (If you hadn’t caught on, this is a real thing that happened to me and not some weird hypothetical)

I was ready to break up over it. Clearly he doesn’t care about me and doesn’t value my time.

But I gave him the benefit of the doubt. I figured he probably just forgot about it and didn’t mean to hurt my feelings. I told him how hurt I was and how hard I worked on it and how much I cared.

He was really sorry. He didn’t mean to hurt me. He would open it right now.

I (foolishly) gave him another chance. And he opened it right away. He spent a half hour flipping through it and he wrote a sweet thank you note. He was really into it and he even put it on his desk for a while.

The relief and joy of having him receive the present I worked so hard on was worth it. I decided to just put it in the past and move on.

I went back to his apartment this morning to start packing up because he’s moving. Guess what we found?

A white box with a card saying “you’re my forever home”.

Turns out he lost it a month after he opened it. He was so worried about hurting my feelings that he just hid it and let me do all the packing for his move.

I’m so amused.
