I work for a large megacorporation. I'm being laid off tomorrow along with a shit ton of others. Due to the nature of my employment, I'm not allowed to talk to anyone about the details of the layoff. I will say the following:

* it was not a surprise. This was something we've all been bracing for for a while.
* I have a very generous severance package. It includes a fairly generous amount of money, plus 12 weeks of outplacement career counseling.
* I'm very senior. I've been with the company for over a decade, I'm in my late 40's, and I am in a director level role.
* I'm in IT for a very specialized and niche part of the company. That is, my career is very very defined to a very very specific area. I am good at what I do. I am not excellent at what I do. I am not a superstar. I can do my job in my sleep. But my job is very very defined to a very very specific area.
* I am doing fairly well for myself. I can probably live off of my savings for a while and not find myself in a situation of poverty.
* I've always been a company man. I've never worked anywhere else but this company. I'm in my third career role (I switched to IT about a decade ago). I've never interviewed anywhere else. I do not know how to interview. My resume is not great. I'm not sure really where to start.

So here is my question. This outplacement career counseling is my only real hope. How can I make the most out of it?
